Accidents Happen

By now you’ve probably heard about the 5 people who were accidentally wounded at 3 different gun shows yesterday. Liberals on twitter and at Think Progress (the name of which always amuses me, as it assumes that the people there actually think)  are having a field day with it already.

Liberals are saying “witty” things like:

This is absolutely horrible. If only there had been people with guns there who could have prevented this travesty!

The sad truth is that not everyone who owns a gun knows how to safely use it. One half of a right is to exercise that right responsibly. We have freedom of speech,  but it is necessary that we act responsibly with that right, to not slander, incite violence or shout “fire” in a crowded theater. The same thing applies to guns.

I have one message for gun owners.

For god’s sake, know your gun safety and put it to practice. You are making the rest of us look like fools. You have a responsibility to yourselves, to other gun owners, and the 2nd amendment to use your rights responsibly.

I have another message for liberals.

Accidents happen.

5 people were injured in 3 separate accidental events. These were not malicious attacks with the intent to kill. No one was killed, for that matter.

There is a reason why conservatives make the point that murderers and mass shooters go after soft targets and that their would never be a mass shooting at a gun show.

First of all, the FBI defines a mass shooting as “four or more murders occurring during a particular event with no cooling-off period between the murders. A mass murder typically occurs in a single location in which a number of victims are killed by an individual.”

If the man who injured 3 people in Raleigh, North Carolina this morning had pulled out his gun and begun maliciously attacking the people at the gun show, looking to create a body count, I have no doubt that there would have been more than one someone there at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show who would have stopped that shooting.

That’s why “mass shootings” don’t happen at targets where people are likely to be armed. It’s not a mass shooting if an armed citizen stops the shooter before they kill four people, which is something that liberal organizations, like Mother Jones, have taken advantage of, by producing “studies” that say that not a single public shooting in the past 30 years has been stopped by an armed civilian. As Ann Coulter said, when she wrote about that particular study at Townhall, this is a shock to any who has paid any attention to the news at any time in the past 30 years.

The magazine reaches its conclusion by simply excluding all cases where an armed civilian stopped the shooter: They looked only at public shootings where four or more people were killed, i.e., the ones where the shooter wasn’t stopped.

If we care about reducing the number of people killed in mass shootings, shouldn’t we pay particular attention to the cases where the aspiring mass murderer was prevented from getting off more than a couple rounds?

It would be like testing the effectiveness of weed killers, but refusing to consider any cases where the weeds died.

We Know How to Stop School Shootings – Ann Coulter

So, yeah, accidents happen, but mass shootings happen where legal guns are absent.

I would rather have the occasional accident, while encouraging responsible gun ownership and training, than strip people of their constitutional rights and their ability to defend themselves, their family, and their property; making them a target.

Here’s a suggestion, tax credits for taking a gun safety course or gun training, that would reduce the dangers of accidents. Oh wait, sorry, that would encourage gun ownership and liberals wouldn’t want that. Because we all know they care less about responsible gun ownership or protecting civilians from becoming victims, and more about grandstanding, making a point, and exploiting tragedies. After all, as one liberal stated on twitter, the number of people injured today was “tragically low”, because we all know that gun owners lives are just worthless, because they disagree with you politically.

That’s okay with me, while liberals celebrate the injury of gun owners, I’ll be target shooting with me family in the national forest, because I am a responsible gun owner and the only things getting shot with my gun will be trees, rocky bluffs, and home intruders.

  1. Meredith,
I hope my comments don't come through twice. I hit a wrong button and everything I wrote previously disappeared. I just really like the way you write. Donlyn, too. What a common sense point of view in this article you've written.I just found DS&P yesterday, but I think you already made me a fan.

  2. Thank you! That's such a compliment.
A little dose of common sense can help anything, unfortunately liberals seem to lack that viewpoint though.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I've been out doing target shooting most of the day.

We love feedback and our fans ^_^
